“I joined Monarchs in 2017 because I want to be part of a group that advocates on behalf of its undocumented students. It’s important that educational institutions do more than just admit undocumented people into their universities, but that they provide a safe space for them too. A big part of that is amplifying immigrant voices and the issues that they face.“

ABRIL GURROLA
Vice-President

Abril is a double major in Environmental Science & Policy and Spanish. She’s also a part of Ballet Folklorico.

“When I started University, I thought there was a lack of readily available resources and support for incoming first generation and/or undocumented students. I joined Monarchs in 2018 because I was grateful for the work and mission they promoted towards undocumented students and its allies. Growing up in a mixed status family taught me the value of a community and so I hope we can continue to foster one full of support at St. Ed’s.”

Activism is important to me, I’m always looking for ways to be in active alley. It’s important to me to show up for my undocumented brothers and sisters, my quick community, and survivors who are working hard to overcome things they seldom talk about.”  Activism is important to me, I’m always looking for ways to be in active alley. To me, being part of the Monarchs means relying and trusting a community of strong and intelligent women that care for one another and their surroundings. I think that is something that characterizes our work for the undocumented and immigrant community: finding resources, protecting each other, and most importantly, listening.”

Something to highlight: Yo Vengo a Ofrecer Mi Corazón by Susana Baca is a beautiful song that reminds me of the immigrant fight.
